Trip Reports

These are all of the road trips I’ve written up so far. Under the photo title for each trip, there is a short synopsis of where we went, along with a link to the page for the corresponding trip. Each road trip page features an image of the route with the stats from the trip, along with the trip report posts for each day of the trip.

Our second longest road trip took us from South Dakota, through Wyoming, Idaho, and Utah to the Needles District of Canyonlands in 2021. We tent camped in the Bighorns, Grand Tetons, City of Rocks, Fremont Indian State Park, Capitol Reef National Park, and Natural Bridges National Monument on our way to the Canyonlands Needles District in Utah.

Our 2020 road trip took us to the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming. We tent camped at four campgrounds in the Bighorn National Forest and one night at Wind Cave National Park. We visited Tensleep Canyon, Castle Gardens Scenic Area, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Shell Falls Interpretive Site, and Wind Cave National Park.

We decided to take a quick day trip to the Badlands in the fall of 2019. We hiked the Notch Trail and enjoyed the most beautiful sunset ever, before heading home in a heavy thunderstorm.

Our longest road trip to date took us from South Dakota, through Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, and Nevada on our way to California in 2019. We tent camped along the way, including a night at Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada, before spending two nights at Joshua Tree National Park. On our way back home, we camped at Snow Canyon State Park, Grand Canyon North Rim, Dinosaur National Monument, and Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area.

Our 2018 tent camping road trip was an epic national park adventure! We visited Capulin Volcano National Monument, Kasha-Katue National Monument, Petrified Forest National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Colorado National Monument, and Scotts Bluff National Monument. We camped in several of the national parks, as well as Homolovi State Park in Arizona and Kodachrome Basin State Park in Utah.

We decided to take a last minute road trip to view The Great American Eclipse of 2017. Our little two-day adventure includes stops at Minuteman Missile National Historic Site, Badlands National Park, the National Grasslands Visitor Center and Wall Drug, a base tour at the South Dakota Air and Space Museum, tent camping in the Black Hills, and we viewed the eclipse from Agate Fossil Beds National Monument.

In 2017, we embarked on our first substantial tent camping road trip. After a night in the Black Hills, we set off for the red rocks of Utah. We took a drive through Rocky Mountain National Park and hiked to Delicate Arch in Arches National Park. We also visited Canyonlands Islands in the Sky District and Goblin Valley State Park. We planned to head home after we toured Timpanogos Cave National Monument, but decided to add a night at Grand Teton National Park.

In 2016, we had planned to visit waterfalls in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but everything on our agenda got flooded out the night before we left. We found this out 100 miles down the road in the morning, so our entire Plan B road trip ended up being planned from the side of the road somewhere in Minnesota. We saw a lot of trees, a couple waterfalls, and a lighthouse on Lake Michigan.

Our road trip to Iowa in 2014 was our first time road tripping and tent camping with just the three of us. We toured the John Deere Engine Works in Waterloo and visited the John Deere Headquarters, as well as the John Deere Pavilion. We loved the show American Pickers and went to their Antique Archeology store in LeClaire. We also enjoyed views of the Mississippi River and toured a cave in Minnesota.
